Have a great Columbus Day Weekend!

The First Grade has already been talking about the Food Drive that will be taking place at the beginning of November. It will run for 2 weeks. The Bishop has challenged us to collect food and the class that has accumulated the most "weight" in food collected will be invited to the Bishop's house for songs with "Mickey" (his dog) and other fun things. Of course, I have taken the opportunity to encourage them to do extra chores to help parents, grandparents, neighbors etc. so they can earn "heavy" canned food or other dry food items. Please help First Grade.

On Friday, October 2nd, we will have our first spelling test. Every Monday, the students will have the list in their Homework Folders and will write the words 3 times for homework. I will also try to post them on my Blog every Friday.

I'd like to remind you that our drivers/chaperones need to be approved by the Diocese. If you are planning on driving on our field trips, please fill out the paperwork that was sent home at the beginning of the school year. If you can't find your form, please contact the office. We need to have them in and processed by the first field trip on October 16th.

Read Log

Welcome to First Grade!!

We have sent the Reading Log Folders home.
Every night read to your child or have your child read to you. Make sure you write down the title of the books and list how many minutes you read. On Sunday, total the minutes and sign the form. Return the folders to school on Monday and we will put a new Reading Log form in the folder.

At the end of the year we total the number of minutes the your child and the rest of First Grade has read. It's amazing how those minutes add up!

This our LAST spelling list from our Spelling Book!!! I will be sending home spelling lists with words from our Reading books.

Our auction project is coming along very nicely. Thank you for all your help and please check with Robin Richter or Jeannie Fanjoy to see if we need any other "accessories" for the project.

I also need a few First Grade Parent Volunteers to help me serve cake and punch to our Second Grade students and their families after they make their First Communion at the Cathedral on Saturday, May 9th. We would need to be there at 11:00 a.m. to set up and then serve them after Mass is over. Please email me and let me know if you are available to help.

Have a Blessed Easter and a wonderful Spring Break.

Ms. Lindon just provided a great web site for spelling: spellingcity.com
It's a great way to study and play with the words. The site helps your child study the words, and comes up with games for the words!

Please think about our auction project and think of things that will enhance our overall theme. We have great parents already working on it - it's going to be great!!

Please continue to practice math facts. We need to be adding and subtractingto 20 comfortably by the end of the year. We will continue to have "doubles" quizzes on Friday's. Using doubles is one of the strategies that helps with knowing our math facts.

Please have your child orally read their core books and First and Second Readers to you. This really helps improve fluency. They have come a long way and like showing you how well they read! Also, make sure you include these times in their Reading Logs!

Please make sure to sign Reading Folders and Homework notebooks, students will lose 5 minutes if their folders and notebooks are not signed.

Have a Great Week!

Also, we need to be memorizing our Math Facts. The class needs to be "comfortably" adding and subtracting math facts up to 20. The students know the strategies to help solve the problems, ie, using doubles, using 10's, zero, etc. but now need to work on knowing the facts. Flashcards are great, playing addition and subtraction games with a deck of cards is also a fun way to "play/learn" the math facts. It's really important to memorize these math facts. It will make addition/subtraction with regrouping, multiplication and division much easier. Please work with your child.
I sent home laminated "doubles" math cards a few weeks ago. We will be having weekly quizzes on the doubles and other math facts on Friday mornings.
